As per a national survey’s report on perceptions regarding miscarriage, most people believe that miscarriage is a very ‘uncommon’ issue. And majority has a minimum understanding of its cause. However, it is the most common cases of pregnancy loss; women suffer from, according to another data revealed by American Pregnancy Association (APA). Out of all, 10-25% of the pregnancies recognized clinically, experience an early miscarriage.
With this scary figure, most individuals suffer from feelings of guilt and isolation, more due to lack of understanding. Experts say, “This can further affect the woman’s health negatively. So, it is very important to make all understand the real causes of early miscarriage.”
Early miscarriage is a loss of fetus that happens within the first 12 weeks of gestation.
APA opines, there can be various reasons for the loss of a fetus prior to 20th week. Some are out of anyone’s control and others can be kept under check.
Talking of the uncontrollable reasons, the most common cause is chromosomal problems. As March of Dimes stated, around 70% of miscarriages in the 1st trimester and 20% in the 2nd trimester occur due to chromosomal issues in the fetus.
“It’s quite a mystery. Often the two chromosomes fail to line up correctly during conception. However, that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with either of the parents. Again, it doesn’t signify that the same will repeat next time,” said an assistant professor at Ohio State University College of Medicine.
Another professor and OB-GYN, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Shilpa Babbar also supported this genetic cause as the most common for early miscarriage. She also clarified that the situation is completely out of control.
The second common cause of miscarrying is APS or Antiphospholipid Syndrome. It signifies a weakened cervix or blood clot condition. Doctors usually prescribe heparin shots and aspiring to treat this during the early weeks.
“If detected within the 1st 12 weeks of pregnancy, chances of miscarrying can be prevented with a cervical cerclage,” experts stated.
Besides these, diabetes, high blood pressure, low progesterone level, uterine cavity abnormality, PCOS, etc. are some medical disorders in mothers that can lead to a pregnancy loss.
Regarding the controllable causes, doctors opine to bring a change in certain habits and overall lifestyle. Women should strictly avoid smoking, drinking alcohol or drug use during their gestation period. “If a couple plans to extend their family, it’s safe to avoid all these ahead in time,” commented a top OB-GYN in an email interview.
Again, obesity or underweight and fever during the early trimester can also lead to the loss of fetus. According to Mayo Clinic and APA, to avoid all such probabilities, it is very important to maintain a healthy atmosphere for a baby to grow.
They have recommended would-be mothers to eat healthy, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, etc. However, the most important among all is to manage stress and anxiety. Yoga and meditation can help a lot to combat any such chances.
In this context, another data shows that only 25% of women can understand that they are miscarrying. Few of the symptoms include menstruation-like cramps, bleeding or extreme abdominal pain, discharge of tissue through the vagina, pink or clear vaginal fluid, etc.
“Good news, even if someone experiences early miscarriage, that doesn’t always mean she can’t conceive again. Only make sure – you are the healthiest you,” doctors say.
